Most gardens cannot do without trellis fences. Made either of wood or metal, trellis fences are usually used to provide not just a climbing post for some garden plants but also to add beauty to the garden or the yard itself. Trellis fences can serve several different purposes but before you decide to set up one in your own home, you might want to consider the pros and cons of having them.

Pros of Trellis Fences

1. Trellis Fence Can Add Beauty To Your Garden.

One of the most common reasons why people put up trellis fences is because they want to add value to their garden. Trellis fences are very easy to install and are a very effective way to make a dull garden appear more attractive. The open-weave trellis fence, for instance, is what most people opt for when it comes to trellis fence style because it can provide privacy but allows air to pass through at the same time. Not only does a trellis fence add beauty and privacy to a home, it can also provide shelter and support for most climbing plants and flowers.

2. Trellis Fences Can Provide Privacy.

Again, a well-designed trellis fence can add privacy to an open area in your house like the yard or the garden. Trellis fences are an inexpensive way to add partition to the garden as well. What’s more, it can help hide areas of the garden or yard that you wouldn’t want to be too visible like the trash area.

3. Trellis Fences Can Provide Shade.

The garden is one of the best places to go to when you need to unwind or relax. With the help of a tall trellis fence, you can enjoy sitting down or strolling in your garden in the afternoon without having to worry about the sun getting too hot on your skin. A trellis fence can also help throw a play of light, which can make your garden look more beautiful and relaxing.

Cons of Trellis Fences

1. Trellis Fences Cannot Withstand Strong Impact.

Since most trellis fences are made of wood, it can easily go down when the wind blows too hard especially during a storm. This can cause you to worry about spending money on repairs each time there’s a bad weather condition, which leads us to the next disadvantage of trellis fences.

2. Trellis Fences Need High Maintenance.

Just as you need to spend some money on repairs when your wooden trellis fence goes down, you will have to spend some money as well on metal trellis fences when their appearance get spoiled by rust. Furthermore, wooden fences are susceptible to mold and mildew when constantly exposed to moisture, and you would have to repaint it on a regular basis if you want to maintain its natural glow.

Trellis fences are really good addition to a garden or a lawn, and by considering both the pros and cons of having one, you can eliminate the risk of having to regret ever having or not having one in the end.

No matter how beautiful your wooden fence may be, it is still subject to factors that can make it lose its attractive glow over time. Constant exposure to sunlight, wind, and rain can cause discoloration that can make your once good-looking fence look old and dull. Fortunately, it is very possible to restore the beauty of your fence especially if most of the damage it acquires is only superficial. With some simple repairs, you can definitely make your wooden fence glow once again and even prolong its life.

1. Wash the Fence

Washing your wooden fence with a power washer is the first step into restoring it’s beauty. If you don’t have a power washer available at home, you can either borrow from a friend who has one or you can rent one. The key to using a power washer is choosing the right sprayer. Since a power washer is strong enough to ruin your wooden fence, you have to come up with a sprayer that would get rid of the dirt from the wood’s surface without eroding it. Pick a power washer with 1,500-2000 PSI and 15 and 25 sprayer tips. With the tip of the sprayer 20 inches away from the fence, start spraying it until you see the color of the wood brighten a little. This indicates that the surface of the wood is effectively getting stripped away. Do not point your sprayer in a single area to avoid gouging it, instead, keep moving the spray through the entire fence. Observe the wood carefully and stop spraying once you see that the color has stopped changing.

2. Fix Damaged Pieces

Simple repairs are enough to extend to the life of your old wooden fence. After you’ve washed the fence clean, let it dry for 24 hours and check if there are any boards that need to be replaced or tightened. Check for splits and cracks as well. To repair splits, apply waterproof glue to the damaged area. You should also get rid of protruding nails if there are any use screws to pull loose board pieces together. You might also want to apply some wood preservative on the base of the fence posts to prevent it from rotting quickly.

3. Apply Stain

Finally, stain the wooden fence to make it look good as new. A transparent oil stain is ideal if you want to preserve the natural color of your wood. Make sure you have allowed the fence to dry completely before painting it. Using a paint roller, apply the sealer into the wood, making sure the wood absorbs the sealer completely. When you’re done covering the large surfaces of the fence, take a 2” brush and stain the smaller areas next. The oil stain should keep your wooden fence looking good and protected for up to five years, but you would want to recoat it every two to three years to make sure that its beauty is well-maintained.

Since most pool accidents occur during the summer months, people have this idea that they only need to keep their pool fenced at those times. This, however, is a misconception, because if you are using your pool every day and have small children at home, drowning incidents can happen anytime. According to statistics, such accidents happen not because the family spends a lot of time around the pool area but because they do not practice necessary precaution such as looking after small children and making sure they do not get near an unfenced swimming pool.

This is where the importance of a wooden fence comes in. However, the problem lies when homeowner decide to install fences around their pools only when they think necessary like during hot summer months. The thing is, since the pool is functional all year round, there’s a large percentage for a small child to fall into it if it is not properly fenced. You can definitely avoid these unwanted situations by setting up a permanent wooden fence around your pool. This way, you are sure that your kids are protected each day of the year.

Another excellent idea is to install a removal safety fence around your pool. This is what most families do especially when they do not have small children at home. When the need arises, or when there are small children visiting the place, you can just set up the safety pool fence temporarily or as long as the kids are around. When the time comes that you don’t need it any longer, or when the children are gone, you can simply get rid of the fence and keep it until the time that it would be needed again. Many families love this idea since installation and storage can be done in just a matter of minutes. Most of these pool fences also have automatic features that close the fence gate on its own, providing real security to any family out there.

So when is the best time to have a safety wooden fence installed around your pool? To answer that question, you have to understand first that pool fences are not only for small kids but for pets as well. If you either have a baby that’s around 9 months old and a pet you don’t want around the pool, then you can start considering having a safety fenced installed for the pool. In fact, you should have that fence up even before your child starts learning how to walk because you never know when your child is going to go mobile especially if he or she has already reached 9 months of age.

You might also want to consider the fact that even if you don’t have a child at home yet, friends who visit from time to time may take their toddler along with them. By having a fence around your pool, you are giving not just yourself but also your friends a sense of security.

It is very important when building a fence that one take the time to correctly establish the fence post and the holes that contain them. In many ways, this is stabilizing base of any fence. The ability to create steady fence posts which in turn will create a steady fence is greatly dependent on digging holes for the posts. The way in which the holes are created will determine whether the fence is level and stable. The inability to dig holes deeply for the fence posts can result in a fence that could give way when subjected to the elements. Thus, it is very important to understand how to dig fence post holes in the correct manner.

Certain tools will be needed in order to dig fence post holes properly. There are some people that prefer to dig their post holes manually with a shovel or a device called a clam shell digger. Although these are very viable options for digging post holes, the process can be a bit laborious. It is best to use a posthole digger or auger which is specially made for this type of project. The posthole diggers are available in both manual and powered options. Those that have to dig a few holes should opt for the powered posthole digger to assist with the process in a more efficient manner. It should be noted that it may take two people to drill the postholes with this tool.

Prior to digging it is highly recommended that a thorough review of the surrounding land is completed. A survey of the land is usually necessary prior to digging to ensure that there will not be any problems. There are numerous utility lines for sewage, water and electricity that run underground. It is the responsibility of the fence builder to know what is beneath the ground prior to digging. Failure to take this very important step could lead to trouble if the posthole digger should hit an existing utility line. Survey the land prior to digging post holes.

When digging post holes it is necessary to stake the locations of the holes prior to digging. This will ensue that all the areas are marked accordingly. To effectively operate the posthole digger it should placed in the center of staked position for the fence post. Place the bottom portion of the diggers into the ground forcefully until it is in the ground. Those using a manual digger will have to open and close the handles of the digger in order to begin the process of making the hole. The powered diggers will require that user keep consistent pressure on the handles for stability and control while the hole is being created.

On average, all the holes that are created should be at least two feet deep. Creating a hole this deep provides a strong foundation for the fence post. After digging the hole it will be necessary to prep the hole by adding a couple of inches of gravel for drainage prior to inserting the fence posts. After the fence posts are inserted concrete can be added to the hole to set the fence posts in place.

Learning how to dig fence post holes is not a hard process. It simply takes preparation and patience to establish the base for building a secure fence.

How to Design a Wooden Fence

Having a fence on one’s property serves numerous purposes. It can be used to establish property lines. A wooden fence can be used to keep others from trespassing onto a piece of land. It can also be used to add style to the exterior of a home. There are many uses for fences. As there are many uses, there are also just as many styles that can be applied when building a wooden fence. Anyone that is interested in building a fence for their property should consider a number of elements. Knowing how to design a wooden fence properly is very important in order to create the fence that is desired.

Make a Plan-In order to build a wooden fence a detailed plan is needed. The plan should include both pictures and detailed instructions for building the fence. This plan should include a picture or drawing of the fence as it relates to the area where it is placed. The drawing should be detailed and include property line or local restrictions which can be noted by using annotation on the plan. Likewise, those any obstructions such as tress, shrubbery and even utility issues should be noted on the plan in full. It is important to remember that the blueprint will be used to assist the builder with everything from where to avoiding digging fence posts to the style of the fence gate. It is very important that the blueprint for the fence is detailed.

Fence Usage-Knowing and understanding the purpose of the fence is very important. This will play a big factor when deciding upon the style of the fence. There are a number of styles available but not all of them are suitable. For example, someone that wants to keep people off their property indefinitely is less likely to build a fence that has a gate that is accessible to the public. Also, people that want privacy are more likely to build fences that are higher. These are factors that should be considered when considering the style of the fence.

Eliminate Design Issues/Limitations-There are some instances where certain designs will not be applicable for a fence design. This can occur for a variety of reasons such as established community regulations about how fencing should look on everyone’s property or because of restrictions based on the layout of the land. It is important to establish what the limitations are regarding the building of the fence as part of the planning process of building a fence.

Choosing a Design for the Fence-When choosing the design of the fence there are a number of factors to consider. It is important to select a design that will complement the immediate environment. The wooden fence should be compliment the exterior of the property nicely. For example, a simple traditional picket wood fence would compliment a small home nicely. However, that same wooden fence would not look as nice in front of a large, extravagant mansion. It is important to choose a style that will complement the property and blend nicely with the local environment.

Adding Details-The addition of details to a fence can be both functional and stylistic. There are some people that choose to add fences, rails and even decorative pillars. Any of these options I fine as long as it complements the wooden fence.

Learning how to design a wooden fence is important for anyone that is interested in creating a fence to be placed on their property.

It is very important to have regularly scheduled maintenance for a wooden fence. Wooden fences can be a very beautiful addition to any piece of property. However, because these fences are made from a natural material it is necessary to check the fence periodically to ensure that it is holding up well under the elements. Wooden fences tend to be subjected to rot. Once the rot sets in a certain portion of the fence it can spread to other areas causing significant wear and decay if the problem is not addressed immediately. For this reason, it is very important to know how to repair a wooden fence. Learning how to do this can mean the difference between maintaining an existing fence and having to replace it entirely. The following steps will offer assistance for repairing a wooden fence.

Review the Fence for Damage-Before attempting to fix a wooden fence it is best to check the damage in full. This allows for proper assessment of the damage and consideration about how the damage can be fixed. It will be necessary to remove soil away from the base of the post to access the damage, particularly if the post is leaning. The assessment of the damage is important to determine whether or not a fence post has to be fully replaced or simply repaired.

Preparing the Fence for Repair-Depending on the damage, there are different ways to prep a fence for repair. If the a rail on the fence is broken or rotting preparation may involve using a wood preservative to keep the rot from spreading before beginning the actual repair. If a post on the fence is leaning or unstable it will be necessary to dig near the base of the post in order to begin the process of resetting the post. The post will need to reset and leveled with supportive stakes until the resetting process is complete.

Repairing the damage (rails)-If the damage to the fence is related to rails that have broken off or fallen down a small piece of 2×4 can be used to support the rail from underneath. The small piece of 2×4 can be nailed under the rail to place it in its original position. The supportive piece should be caulked to ensure it stays in place and to keep out moisture.

Repairing the damage (posts)-Repairing a fence post will require that the foundation is reestablished to ensure stability. After leveling and staking the post pour concrete in the area around the post to reset the post in place. Make sure to remove air pockets that are found within the concrete by dipping a stick in the concrete repeatedly. After the hole is filled place a mound of concrete at the base of the post to help the water run off and away from the post.

Depending on how the wooden fence is damaged it is important to fix a wooden fence promptly in order to effectively prevent more damage from occurring. Learning how to repair a wooden fence is vital for the upkeep of a wooden fence.

What is trellis fence? To be brief, a trellis fence is considered to be a very sophisticated outdoor gardening fixture which provides support and backup to the young saplings and tree plants for the natural growth.

There are a number of plants which can benefit from such structural assistance in growing. These plants often won’t stand alone independently. In this case, the trellis fence will be very helpful to enhance the speedy growth of these plants and herbs. If you want to get tomatoes, for instance, the trellis is tremendous in helping with the tomatoes. Just use competent and durable trellis fence and you will get fresh tomatoes as the tomato plants will smoothly grow into maturity.

Benefits of the Trellis Fence

The trellis is a type of compact latticework. That means this wooden structure is designed with criss-crossed posts/bars which will provide the backup to the plants to flourish healthily.

A trellis fence is made of wood and other materials. If you are interested to use the vintage garden trellis fences you need to buy the antique wooden trellises which are beautiful in design. However the cost of these conventional age old and good looking trellises will be higher – and you can get style at a much lower price. The trellis can be fixed or attached to the wall with nail. However, proper nailing should be conducted to set the trellis against the wall surface to make sure no damage is done to the wall.

The trellis is carefully designed to help encourage and support growth. If you like plant jasmine or white solanum trees, then the trellis fence is an absolute essential.

If you are keen on gardening then the trellis fence can prove an essential – so ensure that you pick one up if you have any intention of growing anything that needs help growing.
